Abstract

The signing of the Nashville Declaration in the Netherlands brought a lot of controversy and discussion, both on the conventional media as social media. Especially comment sections on social media were filled with aggressive comments, both towards those that supported the declaration as towards those that opposed. Through an analysis of this discussion, I argue that a combination of a feeling of ‘being the majority’ among the minority in this discussion, recent historical changes, and fundamentally different orders of knowledge all contribute to an online discussion that is not only aggressive in tone, but also polarizing in effect.
