Abstract

The possibilities of online religion have been researched in the last decades. The pandemic of COVID-19 brought a new angle in the research of online religion. Believers were forced to participate in online services as offline services were not an option. So, this thesis will focus on the differences between offline and online services and how the religious experience changes in the transition to online services. This has been researched by firstly looking at the discourse of online religion and the meaning of religious experience. Secondly, by interviewing 6 protestant-orthodox believers who are in the same church community and had to transition to online services. By combining both, this thesis analyses the differences between offline and online services and how the religious experience changes. This thesis then argues for the possibilities of online services and how improvements can be made in the religious experience of online services.
