Abstract
Secularism is a widely debated, political structure of society. Talal Asad belongs to the group of thinkers who are critical of secular politics. Jürgen Habermas belongs to the group of thinkers who support secularism. There is no literature in which the two thinkers are brought into conversation. Nevertheless, Asad explicitly criticises Habermas’ view on secularism. His critique is symptomatic of his overall critique of secularism. Furthermore, both Asad and Habermas’ positions represent the two, more general positions in the contemporary debate on secularism. Therefore, in this thesis, I set up a dialogue between the two thinkers. I argue that Asad’s position is subjected to more serious problems than Habermas’. I therefore conclude that the problems that come with Habermas’ position are worth tolerating. In doing so, I suggest that the political system of secularism presents the most convincing answers to the challenging questions of modernity.
