Abstract

In normative psychology, often the goal is to listen to the patient and to cure him or her of their troubles. There is a focus on the treatment and on the person. Less focus is placed on the actual experience, or the things they go through. This thesis focuses on the experience of Swierstra, a man who went through a religious delusion in 2005. As part of his process, he decided to create a documentary and write a memoir to explain his experiences. The key elements of these two artistic expressions are highlighted and analyzed through a theoretical framework of visual and narrative research techniques. This thesis investigates two different strategies and methods of narrating a religious delusional experience, whilst focusing on one specific example. This is done so there is a focus on the experience, and the narrative without focusing on the treatment of someone.
