Abstract
This thesis examines the role of Dutch museums in the repatriation of Native American objects in more detail. In the Netherlands, the focus in repatriation is mainly on objects from the former Indonesian colony, while the Dutch museums also contain objects from other areas. This thesis discusses repatriation policy in the Netherlands on the basis of a case study from the Museum of Ethnology in Leiden. Based on the case study, we can conclude that the role of museums is mainly focused on research and collaboration, because they do not ultimately determine whether the repatriation of the object takes place. Nevertheless, museums are of great importance for conducting provenance research and preserving objects, thus contributing to a better policy on repatriation.
