Abstract
This paper explores the religious and cultural elements and symbolism in the 2016 Chinese fantasy novel Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, and in particular how these factors are used to add depth and substance to the main characters and their relationships. The paper argues that recognizing and understanding the significance of these religious and cultural factor brings in another layer of meaning when interpreting the story. The paper presents examples on how the novel uses the established meaning found in these elements and symbols to its own advantage, by attaching these meanings to itself and placing the story and its characters among the larger context of Chinese religious and cultural tradition. Additionally, through this religious and cultural representation in it, the novel plays a part in religious discourse.
