Abstract
In this research master thesis, I investigate the sense of belonging in members of the German Muslim Scout organization (BMPPD), founded 2010. The role of the youth organization as well as the construction of a German Muslim identity in a context that often presents Islam and Germannes s as mutually exclusive offers new insights in the creation of safe spaces, coping mechanisms, and an active self-empowerment of those who are othered to claim their space in a society. Four semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted, and three podcasts co-hosted by a group leader of the BMPPD were analyzed with the purpose of understanding the sense of belonging and the role of the BMPPD for an individual and society at large. The analysis shows a construction of a German Muslim identity through social engagement and participation in German society as well as a sense of belonging strengthened through the creation of safe spaces without othering and exclusion. I conclude that safe spaces are necessary if there is discrimination, i.e., the very thing the BMPPD counteracts (exclusion)
demands a form of self-separation to affect change in the German society.
