Abstract

This thesis explores the concept of meaningful work in the context of volunteering at Dignis, a care home in Groningen. It focuses on the relationship between the material dimensions of volunteering and the experience of meaningfulness, distinguishing between “meaning in working” - rooted in direct, sensory engagement with residents - and “meaning at work,” shaped by organizational support and community dynamics. Through (walking) interviews, a survey, and participant observation, supported by an extensive literature review, this thesis uncovers that volunteers derive meaning from personal engagement and supportive community interactions. They form inner circles within Dignis and increase their sense of meaningfulness through “simple” and direct interactions with residents. While Dignis tries to foster meaningfulness through events and gestures, challenges such as role ambiguity and emotional tensions persist. Underscoring the critical role of material elements such as the Vriendenbus, the park around Dignis, and everyday objects in shaping volunteers’ experiences, this thesis emphasizes the importance of sensory and embodied interactions. It provides valuable insights into volunteering in care settings and the importance of a holistic approach that integrates personal, social, and material dimensions to enhance volunteer satisfaction (and retention).
