Abstract
Religion and migration is a thoroughly researched topic that gives us answers to questions surrounding the changes and influences regarding the religiosity of migrants in relation to their journey. However, there is no research that I am aware of that focuses on the religiosity of former Soviet migrants in Germany, despite their great number and impact on the German society. This thesis investigates the religious identification and practices of former Soviet migrants, by analysing the narrative of four interviewees concerning the unique stories of their move. On the one hand, I argue that religious practices change, due to new challenges and events during one’s life, regardless of the home state. On the other, the change of the identification is influenced by religious socialization during one’s childhood. Nonetheless, if there was no previous socialization through family members, the identification can change after the move to Germany. As each narrative is a complex web, created out of many life changing occurrences and experiences, religiosity cannot be viewed outside of the overall stories of individuals.
