Abstract
75 years after the end of WWII nationalistic parties are again gaining popularity in European national politics. In Germany, the nationalistic party, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) is gaining political significance and challenging the belonging of Muslims to Germany. Scholars have elaborately discussed the key factors that impact the acceptance and integration of Muslims, but have overlooked the role of recent shift to the political right. This thesis explores how this shift, partially induced by the AfD, is challenging Muslims’ sense of belonging and well-being. By focusing on Nordhorn (ca. 60.000 residents) as a case study, I particularly focus on Muslims living in a small-town context. On the basis of qualitative interviews, the thesis illustrates that Muslims in Nordhorn do not perceive the AfD and it’s positions as challenging for their feeling of belonging or integration. The local context of Nordhorn appears to represent the least successful areas for the AfD, where Muslims consider themselves as firm part of the society and accepted, resulting in a respectful experience as Muslim and lack of islamophobism.
