Abstract

The popular idea that religion and LGBTQ+ do not go together has been argued against by many scholars. There are multiple scholars who have researched how Muslim LGBTQ+ view religion and how they navigate their faith and their sexuality in daily life. However, the research that has been done does not specifically focus on religious people who have a difficult relationship with their family because of their religious ideas. Therefore, this thesis will focus on how Muslim LGBTQ+, who have a difficult relationship with their family, experience the idea that Islam condemns homosexuality. This thesis applies the results of analyzing two semi-structured narrative interviews with LGBTQ+ people who are raised Muslim, live in the Netherlands, and have a difficult relationship with their family. I have found that the idea that Islam condemns homosexuality is mainly experienced within the interviewees’ own family. Furthermore, in this thesis, the popular idea that Islam condemns homosexuality is challenged and I have shown that LGBTQ+ people interpret religious sources differently to validate their identity. With this research, a better understanding of how LGBTQ+ Muslims experience the idea that Islam condemns homosexuality is obtained.
