Abstract

The ethnographic approach in this thesis was used to explore how Dutch and German hunters, as presumedly “dirty workers”, experience meaning in their work. I found that all the hunters I interviewed find meaningfulness in their connection with nature, their care for nature, and the consumption of their shot meat. I realized that the way they experience this meaningfulness is very subjective and that there is a transformational and a corporal aspect of meaning-making. This advocates for attention toward open theories about meaning-making, which include the subjective and transformational aspects and are aware of the important role that sensemaking plays in the construction of meaning and its developments over time. When looking at the second intention of this thesis, that was to find out how the taint that is assigned to the work of hunters affects them. I found out that the effect of the stigma is barely experienced by the hunters and that it does not significantly influence their meaning-making process.
