Abstract

Before you lies my dissertation, which I wrote as part of my master Religion and Pluralism at the University of Groningen. The subject of this dissertation concerns Christian identity in early Christian art and early Christian texts. My interest in early Christian art was sparked during the course Jesus’s Polymorphism in the Wider Context of Greco‐Roman Religion at the Royal Netherlands Institute in the summer of 2021. Initially, this was the focus of my dissertation. However, after a few meetings with my supervisors, they consulted me to also include early Christian texts in my dissertation. I am very glad they did, because this led to an interdisciplinary dissertation in which I was able to combine my two interests: archaeology and religious studies. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the people who helped me while writing my dissertation. First of all, I would like to thank my supervisors, Dr. Arjen Bakker and Prof. Dr. Lautaro Roig Lanzillotta, for their valuable feedback and for pushing me in the right direction with regard to the interdisciplinary approach of my dissertation. Furthermore, I am very grateful to the staff of the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome, which provided me with a research scholarship and allowed me to stay at the Institute for seven weeks in the spring of 2022. During this time, I was able to use the Institute’s elaborate library and visit many catacombs and museums, which has greatly expanded my knowledge on early Christian art as well as early Christian texts. Lastly, I would like to thank my parents for their continuous support throughout my studies. I wish you as much fun while reading this dissertation as I had while writing it.
