Abstract

This bachelor thesis explores lived experiences of migrant mothers on creating a sense of belonging in relation to their mothering practices and the neighborhoods in the city of Groningen. Insights are gained through the following research question: ‘How do mothers with a migration background in the city of Groningen construct their ‘sense of belonging’ through their mothering practices in their everyday lives in neighborhoods in the south of Groningen?’ Through in-depth interviews and an observation, these lived experiences of migrant mothers are explored, challenging and nuancing stereotypes prevalent in Dutch society that create a problemcentered image of migrant mothers. This thesis argues that migrant mothers in the Netherlands foster a deeper sense of belonging through their children, relying on a crucial support network, consisting of friends and contacts, due to the absence of family. This thesis highlights the potential of neighborhoods in facilitating spaces where these support networks could be created. It emphasizes the role of public playgrounds where mothers and children could interact with others, forming social connections that are especially important for full-time migrant mothers. Social organizations and community centers in neighborhoods can play a crucial role in promoting these playgrounds and organizing activities that facilitate connections with other people, which is considered most important in creating a sense of belonging for migrant mothers in this study. Key-words: Sense of belonging, Migrant Mothers, Mothering Practices, Neighborhood.
