Abstract
Central to this thesis is a preliminary inventory of manuscript witnesses of classical texts written in Beneventan script. The texts have been categorized in an excel sheet (Appendix 1). Beneventan script can be considered an artform with strong regional roots; from this viewpoint, it might be comparable to other ancient regional craftmanship, evoking a sense of pride and identity. An identity-based heritage approach to Beneventan script may be defendable since several of the classical authors have their roots in the region, and other authors belong to the golden standard of classical literature of an empire connected to the core of the Southern Italian identity. Biblical narratives and iconography have developed in a continuum from various classical cultural traditions (i.e. Egypt, Persia, Greco-Roman); traditions which have been adapted and transformed by Christian communities for diverse applications. As such, the custom of the use of classical texts may well be viewed in a similar fashion. Desiderius’ innovative transformation of the script enabled Beneventan script to return to the forefront of scribal craftsmanship and regional influence. This resulted in a period of a soaring number of classical authors being copied in Beneventan.
