Abstract
This thesis contextualises the TikTok trend #tradwife by relating it to the broader development of Evangelical responses around gender and family. Through a multimodal discourse analysis of TikTok videos, posted by the influencer Estee Williams, and the book “Let Me Be a Woman”, written by Elisabeth Elliot, this thesis shows that the ideology behind the content of both trends is similar, but the way in which these ideas are conveyed is different. Both trends share a strong belief in gender essentialism, the idea that there is a strict gender role distinction. Elliot disseminates her beliefs from a clear Christian perspective, mirroring the prominent position of Evangelical conservative ideals in the 1970s. However, Williams conveys conservative ideology using secular language, which reflects the broader trend of secularisation present in US society. Both trends contribute to the polarising climate of their time surrounding the topic of gender.
