When Prophecy Becomes a Reality: How the belief in the imminent return of Jesus influenced the Assemblies of God, USA’s perception of the world during 1914-1919.
Bachelor thesis, Bachelor Religiewetenschappen.
Abstract
In this thesis, the Pentecostal Evangel will be analysed from 1914 to 1919. This is the official
magazine of the Assemblies of God, USA. Specifically, their view on World War I and the
emerging modern Zionist movement and how that relates to the Second Coming of Christ will be
discussed. This thesis will describe how the Assemblies see the relationship between what is
happening in the world and their religious ideals. They see both the war and the developments
towards the establishment of an independent Jewish state as signs that Jesus will return soon.
Throughout this period, they are balancing their criticism of the American government’s role in
World War I with not being perceived as being disloyal to the government. They do not think the
U.S. will be excluded from any punishments God will give to the nation, and it also has no special
role to play in the establishment of a Jewish state. This is different from what other American
protestants thought during the time. The main focus in the Pentecostal Evangel is pointing out the
signs that Jesus is returning soon, calling all of their readers to be ready.
